Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • The month of May was characterized by short and erratic rainfall recorded in various parts of the county in the first and second dekad.

  • Recorded amount of rainfall received was 106 mm for an average of 3 rainy days from 6 recording stations.

  • The Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) was 49 illustrating Very positive trend with Tharaka north and Tharaka south sub-counties within normal ranges for the period.

  • The state of water sources was good in the period under review as attributed to adequate recharge of water sources.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • No external migration was reported in the period under review.

  • The received rainfall promoted pasture regeneration that resulted into improving livestock body condition to good which is Normal at this time as indicated by the statistics at 6

  • Milk Production per livelihood zone was recorded at an average of 45 litres and consumption at 35 litres respectively.

  • Terms of Trade (ToT) ratio was at 82 in comparison to an average of 89.

  • Percentage of children at risk for malnourished whose MUAC was below 135mm was 5.87 for the period under review that was below the average of 7.9.
