Source: UN High Commissioner for Refugees
Country: Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen

Operational Context

Between 1 and 3 November, Yemen was hit by a rare tropical cyclone, the most powerful storm Yemen has seen in decades. Cyclone Chapala has brought hurricane-force winds, torrential rain and huge waves to the southern Yemen coastline (OCHA Yemen Flash Update – November 4). This extreme weather condition might explain that no new arrivals travelled to Somalia during the reporting period. Together with partners of the UNHCR-funded Protection and Return Monitoring Network (PRMN), the Mixed Migration Task Force (MMTF) and the Puntland and Somaliland New Arrivals Task Forces, UNHCR rose awareness about the dangers of crossing into Yemen, following the cyclone announcement.

Highlights

  • During the reporting period, no new arrivals were recorded in Somalia.
  • Between 1 and 3 November, Yemen was hit by a rare tropical cyclone, the most powerful storm Yemen has seen in decades. Somalia coastline was also affected, particularly Puntland.
