Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • Rainfall received has seen a decline over the last one month.

  • The rainfall received so far is within normal range.

  • Major water sources for the county during the month were traditional wells, shallow wells, pans and dams ,natural rivers ,springs and boreholes, accounting for 46%, 16%, 14%, 11% , 8% and 5% respectively which is normal around this time.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • There were cases of in-migration of livestock from the neighbouring Kajiado County into the ranching zones of Mukaa, areas bordering Chyulu national reserve in Kibwezi East and Kibwezi West.

  • Livestock body condition was fair to good for both goats and cattle.

  • Currently the drought risk is low hence capacity building of the communities should be encouraged at this time.
