Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators (Environmental indicators)

 January recorded a decrease in amount of rainfall.

 The pasture and browse condition ranged from fair to good but a deteriorating trend expected across all livelihood zones.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

Production indicators

 Livestock body condition was good across all livelihood zones

 Milk production slightly decreased in the current month.

 Poor maize crop harvest recorded but cassava harvest was good.

Access indicators

 The average distance to water sources by both households and livestock recorded an increase.

 The terms of trade were unfavourable for the livestock farmers during the month as compared to the previous month.

 A 45% of total milk produced was consumed at households while the rest was sold at average price of Kshs45.

Utilization indicators

 The proportion of children at risk of malnutrition increased in the month under review and consequently increased the coping strategy index as household food security continued to remain poor
