2015 KCPE results
- The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) through the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MOEST) released the 2015 KCPE results. Dadaab refugee schools posted remarkable improvement in the 2015 KCPE overall performance. A mean score of 252.95 was recorded in 2015 compared to a mean score of 177.4 recorded in 2014. An impressive 2,383 (1,682 male, 701 female) candidates out of the total candidature of 2,749 (1,920 male, 829 female) scored 200 marks and above representing 86.69% pass rate to transit to secondary education compared to a pass rate of 33.43% recorded in 2014 KCPE; 1,068 (824 male, 244 female).
The top performer was a boy recording an impressive 381 marks followed by a girl who garnered 373 marks. 13 candidates (10 male, 3 female) scored 350 marks and above. Despite the performance being skewed in favour of boys, there was a remarkable improvement for girls compared to 2014. In 2014 KCPE, the top girl scored 326 marks with no girl scoring above 350 marks.
Voluntary Repatriation
The Voluntary Repatriation road convoy resumed on 9th January. The first convoy in the year 2016 comprising of five buses carried 218 individuals to Baidoa and Luuq. This was also the 1st road convoy since the movement by road was suspended in October 2015 due to rainy season.
During the reporting period eight road convoys carried 1,902 refugees to Somalia via Dhobley way station. The voluntary return flight movements were still suspended, however, preparations to resume the flights to Mogadishu on 1st February 2016 were undertaken. In total and as of 31st January, 8,003 Somali refugees returned home since 8th December 2014, when UNHCR started supporting voluntary return of Somali refugees in Kenya.
The Return Help Desk (RHD) managed by UNHCR, DRA and NRC were quite busy attending to over 1,700 individuals who visited the RHD to register their intention to return or make enquiries about the voluntary return process. Hundreds others were assisted in the pre departure medical screening in all the camps.
On 26th January, UNHCR repatriation staffs and protection staffs had a meeting on the Child Protection. In the discussion, much emphasize was put on the referral process of all cases involving separated children and unaccompanied minors who are identified at the RHD.
