HIGHLIGHTS

14,903 Identified unaccompanied Minors and Separated Children Households provided with cash grants since 1st January2016

1,288,598 NFIs distributed since January 2015

2,931 Shelters distributed since January 2015

WORKING WITH PARTNERS

  • In line with the ongoing review of the Refugee law, UNHCR facilitated a mission of 16 Members of Parliament (MPs) to give them a better understanding of the refugee situation before considering a proposed draft Refugee Bill that is currently before the Security Committee. The Bill is expected to be published in April.

  • International Women’s day was celebrated by refugees, host community members, UNHCR, Government Representatives and partners. The day’s theme was “Gender Equality 50/50 by 2030.”

  • UNHCR in collaboration with World Vision and WFP hosted four members of the U.S. Congress who were in Kakuma to familiarize themselves with the operation. The Congress people were representing the States of Maryland, South Dakota, Minnesota and Missouri.

  • The One Campaign Team led by Bono visited Dadaab in order to better understand the challenges faced by the youth and refugees in general in order to identify the interventions required.

  • The Humanitarian Private Sector Partnership Platform for East Africa (HPPP-EA) was officially launched in Nairobi. The event was live streamed in Kakuma where refugee and host community business representatives participated

  • Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (BPRM) Regional Refugee Coordinator was in Kakuma with officials from the Political Section who were interested in seeing the work that BPRM supports in the camp.

  • A Child protection monitoring and evaluation mission from ECHO was in Kakuma to assess the digitization process of Child Protection service delivery.

  • Premier Skills - a football programme by the English Premier League and the British Council was in the camp to identify ways of partnering with UNHCR to support sports. The mission led by the Director of the British Council Kenya office met sports coaches from refugee and host community and conducted training sessions with them. They also distributed kits.

  • Australia for UNHCR, a key UNHCR’s fundraising partner was in Kakuma. The organisation supports UNHCR in WASH and is currently fundraising for education, child protection and health, particularly maternal and child health.

  • World Water Day was marked in the camp by UNHCR and partners. The theme was “Water and Jobs” and issues concerning water and strides made were highlighted.

  • African Union Officials carried out a fact-finding mission in Dadaab camps.
