A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on access to UNHCR registration system - proGres was signed by UNHCR Country Representative Raouf Mazou and Commissioner Harun Komen of Department of Refugee Affairs (DRA) on 15 April. This is to grant DRA’s Registration and Refugee Status Determination officer’s access to proGres pending the creation of DRA’s refugee’s management system.
Kenya refugee population verification exercise is set to commence in June 2016 covering all camps, Nairobi and main urban areas. The verification exercise will be combined with the roll out of the Biometric Identity Management System (BIMS). In the camps the Global Distribution Tool system will be also rolled out for use at Food Distribution points.
The Refugee Legislative proposal (private member’s bill, through KEPHRA) was presented to the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security committee for a pre-publication scrutiny. Through the Attorney General’s office the Legislative proposal was referred to the Ministry of Interior for their consideration.
The UK Secretary of State for International Development visited Kakuma. She was accompanied by Turkana County Governor Nanok, UNHCR Country Representative and WFP Country Director. She was able to see some of the DFID funded projects in the camp.
Four Police Officers from Dadaab were awarded by Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for their outstanding performance. The officers work closely with UNHCR in Protection and Security team in Dadaab.
From 25 to 29 April, UNHCR facilitated the participation of 30 refugees (9 from Kakuma) in Critical Conversations, an event hosted by the French and German Cultural Centres (Alliance Française and Goethe-Institut Nairobi).
UNHCR organized the return of the first group of Somalis from Kakuma to Somalia. The volrep (voluntary repatriation) exercise was done for 28 Somalis and comes after the signing of the Tripartite Agreement between Kenya, Somalia and UNHCR in 2013.
A delegation of Swedish business people from 15 companies visited Kakuma. The group led by the Ambassador to Kenya, Johan Borgstam and Trade Commissioner Robin Pettersson was accompanied by UNHCR Kenya Deputy Representative.
The Associate Monitoring Officer (AMO) based at the SGBV Section in Geneva visited Kakuma. The mission objective was to assess initiatives, impact and sustainability of SGBV prevention and response programmes.
UNHCR met with youth groups across the camp to share encouraging news regarding the proposals they submitted to the Global Youth Initiative Fund 2016. For the second year in a row and out of 80 proposals submitted globally, a group from Kakuma was selected among the winning groups.
The second edition of the Artists for Refugees project started on 15 April with the arrival of Victor Ndula and his team. Victor is a leading editorial illustrator for The Star newspaper and is one of the lead facilitators of the livelihoods project, which aims to mentor and nurture talented youth in the camp in various fields of the Arts.
UNHCR hosted a team from the Oxford Research Mission from 11 to 18 April. The team undertook a preparatory visit for Oxford University to lay the foundation for a bigger research mission on “Refugee Economies” in Kakuma.
The Tegla Lorupe Peace Foundation was in Kakuma to conduct trial races for refugee and host community athletes.
