One month after the earthquake, humanitarian needs persist in most of the affected areas, particularly in rural areas and vulnerable communities.
On 18 May, two aftershocks shook the country resulting in evacuations of buildings and widespread fear in people. The magnitude of the aftershocks were 6.8 and 6.9 with the epicentre in Esmeraldas Province. Two people were confirmed dead with the replicas, and 28 houses affected in the same province.
The national Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has re-activated and is assessing the damages of these replicas.
The Government of Ecuador estimates that 240,704 people have been directly affected by the 16 April earthquake.
An estimated 28,678 people are still living in collective centres, spontaneous sites and with host families.
The death toll is 661.
The Ministry of Housing reports 10,506 damaged or destroyed buildings in urban areas of Esmeraldas and Manabí. Provincial Government of Manabi reports 8,157 damaged or destroyed buildings in rural areas. Building-to-building assessments are on-going.

Four weeks after the earthquake, assessments on damages and losses are still ongoing.
So far 661 people are dead and 12 remain missing.
The National Assembly approved a project for a law for land use planning and strengthening reconstruction strategies in affected areas.
As of 14 May, the Government, international community and civil society have distributed 696,666 food kits.
Coverage of public water services in the province of Manabí before the earthquake was 52 per cent. To date, 60 per cent of this – or approximately 30 per cent overall -- has been re-established through repairs, mobile and water tanks.
The Armed Forces and Ministry of Social and Economic Inclusion have identified 250 temporary shelters and collective centers that are hosting 1,705 families.
At least 808 educational facilities have been damaged in the six affected provinces. A total of 249,598 students, of whom 121,500 in the provinces of Manabi and Esmeraldas are in need of temporary education and protection spaces
