Outbreak Overview

ZIKA virus (ZIKV) has been reported in Samoa since 2015 by ILM Laboratory. Since then no further positive ZIKV tests were reported from there, including samples sent in 2016. Meanwhile, ESR Lab in NZ has confirmed ZIKV cases in Samoa from February 2016.

The current ZIKV epicurve, shows current weekly trend of clinical and confirmed cases. So far, there are 167 recorded cases, with males comprised of 43% (72) of the cases, compared to 57% (95) of females.

The age group most affected are the youth and young children with an attack rate of 0.9 per 1,000 population. So far, areas for confirmed ZIKV cases are shown on the Map, with concentration around the Apia Urban Area (AUA) and North West Upolu (NWU) regions.

Laboratory

Currently a total of 24 ZIKV positive Lab confirmed cases for Samoa 2015/2016. Two cases of pregnant mothers were reported.

Case Definition:

Suspected ZIKV: Rash OR Fever AND any of the following symptoms: arthralgia, myalgia, non-purulent conjunctivitis, pain behind the eyes, headache or malaise Confirmed ZIKV: A suspected case with Laboratory (PCR) positive result for the specific detection of Zika virus.
