Highlights and Statistics
As a result of limited admissions by Hungarian authorities of 30 per day, the number of asylum seekers near the “transit zones” at the border with Hungary had grown to over 570 on 26 May, but with encouragement by authorities, UNHCR and partners to wait in better sites, again fell to 395 by 29 on May. 43% were children, suffering under the lack of sufficient shelter, sanitary facilities and other basic services.
Of the estimated 300 irregular arrivals per day, UNHCR and partners encountered and assisted around 200.
During the reporting period, 82 persons expressed intent to seek asylum, bringing the total in May to 813 and for the year 2016 to 3,352 (statistics courtesy of the Ministry of Interior).
