Syrian Arab Republic: IOM regional response to the Syria crisis (May 2016)

Highlights

  • Syria: On 31 May, in response to the sudden influx of IDPs to Kafer Bhm (Homs), IOM provided 966 beneficiaries with hygiene kits and jerry cans. Furthermore, through its hub in Jordan, IOM provided transportation assistance to UNHCR, WFP, FAO, and UNICEF, managing eight convoys including trucks delivering humanitarian assistance to southern Syria.

  • Lebanon: On 30 May, the General Directorate of General Security of Lebanon with support from IOM, opened the new arrival terminal of Aboudiyeh border-post between Lebanon and Syria.
    This border post is Lebanon’s second busiest, and is expected to serve 6,000 people daily.

  • Iraq: During the reporting period, 35 refugees, six host community members, and six IDPs in Sulaymaniyah and Erbil received vocational training toolkits as part of IOM’s livelihood support programme.

  • Jordan: Following the study visit to the United Kingdom from 11 to 14 January 2016, a follow-up roundtable discussion on the visit took place on 15 May. The Jordanian delegation who participated in the study visit, government officials, and nongovernment entities were in attendance of the meeting.

  • Turkey: In May, IOM provided over 5,800 students with transportation assistance to schools in Adana, Batman, Malatya and Sanliurfa to increase their access to education. IOM will continue to provide transportation assistance for students during the summer school period.
