ECUADOR

The Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) granted a US$100 million loan to support people affected by the earthquake with the reconstruction of houses and urban infrastructure. Some 7,900 families (around 40,000 people) will be receive new homes.

EL SALVADOR

In June of this year, 2,347 families from El Salvador were detained in the United States due to irregular migratory status. In the last nine months (2016 fiscal year) 18,000 Salvadorian families were detained, which represents close to 40 per cent of the total. The definition of “family” is a child or children who are accompanied by a guardian or family member.

EL NIÑO

The UN is asking the international community for increased support for countries affected by El Niño and for preventative measures to extreme climate changes that are repeating with increasing frequency. El Niño is affecting 60 million people, mainly in Eastern and southern Africa, the dry corridor in Central America, and the Pacific islands in southeast Asia. In Central America, drought has affected 2.8 million people.

VENEZUELA

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights asked the Venezuelan Government to accept a donation of food and medicines to alleviate the scarcity of core products in the country. Colombian authorities confirmed that in July, 165,000 Venezuelans crossed into Colombia to buy food, medicine, and other supplies. Border posts were set–up for two consecutive weekends, although closed this past weekend.

BOLIVIA

Some 225,000 hectares of crops were affected by drought in the department of Santa Cruz. A state of emergency was declared for the agriculture sector due to a concern in the decrease of food. All crops have suffered some type of damage due to drought.

PERU

Seven mobile health clinics were installed in the Plaza de Armas in the city of Puno to attend the population in the department’s 58 districts affected by low temperatures. The Puno Regional Government vehicles include some 200 heath workers who will also begin a vaccination campaign for flu, pneumococcal disease and rotavirus infection.
