Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

The biophysical indicators show negative variation within the normal seasonal ranges.

Rainfall:

  • Negligible rainfall was received in the month where on average the county received 3.1mm of rainfall.

  • The vegetation condition. The 3-month VCI reduced in July and shows that the County vegetation condition is within moderate vegetation deficit at 24.86

  • Currently the state of water sources is at the range of 2-3 in the county. This is below normal ranges during this time of the year.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

Production indicators

  • Livestock migration towards the Tana delta and also towards the neighbouring counties; Kitui, Kilifi, Garissa and Ijara, remains prominent.

  • No livestock deaths due to drought conditions were reported.

  • Livestock body condition is deteriorating in all livelihood zones.

  • Milk production at household level was below the normal ranges at 28.65 litres.

Access indicators

  • Milk consumption was below normal at 17.1 litres.

  • The grazing distances (one way) was above normal at 10.74km.

Utilization indicators

The malnutrition status of children under the age of 5 years who are at risk remained stable at 10.1 % in July compared to the month of June which stood at 10.25%. This could be attributed to the reduced amounts of milk for consumption at the household level and also due to ongoing relief Interventions.
