Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • The county received off season showers averaging to 56.5 mm which was mainly experienced in agro pastoral zone.

  • Slightly improved was noted in rangeland vegetation cover across all livelihood zones compared to last month as a result of cumulative effects of showers received since onset of long rains.

  • Recharge for both ground and surface water sources in agro pastoral improved as a result of the on-going off season showers but declining most parts of pastoral zone.

Socio economic indicators details

  • Livestock from Samburu Central and some from Samburu North are within the wet season grazing areas. However livestock in Samburu East migrated to dry season grazing zone.

  • Production and consumption of milk declined due to migration in Samburu East

  • Few deaths have been reported attributed to diseases and predation but none as a result of drought.

  • Body condition of both browser and grazer was good to fair

  • A sale a goat was exchanged for 51 kg of cereals as indicated by the TOT.

  • Prevalence of sampled children under five at risk of malnutrition worsened with percentage increasing to 23.4% from 16.7 % recorded the previous month.

  • The current Coping Strategy Index (CSI) was 1.36 compared to 1.3 noted in the last month.
