Biophysical Indicators

The County received normal to below normal rainfall in the MarchApril-May rainy season which was fairly distributed in temporal and spatial distribution.

Pasture and browse conditions is fair about 55% and poor in the rest of the county. There was a significant deterioration reported in large pockets of Wajir West, Southern parts of Wajir North, and Eastern parts pastoral cattle livelihood zone.
The overall vegetation condition declined slightly, as shown by the 3-month VCI decline from a value of 46.4 to 36.88.

The current state of water is at level 3-5 which is normal at this time of the year.
Water search distances for households and livestock increased slightly partly due to drying of 60% of temporary water points such as water pans, natural ponds and seasonal water courses.

Socio-economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

The current livestock body condition was fair to good with a large proportion of animals (all species) being fair.

Livestock market stabilized as well as food prices hence a relatively stronger Terms of Trade (ToT).
The drought risk could increase in the coming months as the expected long dry spell is likely to begin in the month of August/September until the Short Rains in October to December.

In view of the possible alarm situation during the coming long dry spell it is recommended that a close monitoring of the socioeconomic trend be carried out.

It’s also crucial to upscale the county’s preparedness and continue with resilience building interventions/activities.
