Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • The biophysical indicators show negative fluctuations within the expected seasonal ranges.

  • There were hardly any rainfall received within month of July.

  • The vegetation conditions are gradually improving with the overall county VCI of 56.62 falling above the normal ranges of 35-50. Galole and Garsen recorded a VCI of 60.45 and 66.25which is a greaterimprovement compared to last month. The situation isdeteriorating in Bura (with a VCI of 42.38) but still withinnormal condition on a reducing trend compared to last month.

  • SPI forMay improved at 0.33. This was as a result of ongoing long rains.

  • Currently thestate of water sources is at the range of ‘3’ in the county. This is normalrange butthe situationis expected to deterioratewith the onset of dry spell.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • There are no unusual livestock migration patterns noted in the county, however with the onset of the dry spell, migrations of livestock moving towards the marginal and mixed livelihood zones is expected.

  • Livestock body condition for cattle, goats and sheep is good within mixed livelihood zones but fair in both Pastoral and Marginal mixed. This is expected to worsen with the onset of dry spell.

  • Milk production has greatly reduced and below normal ranges.

Utilization indicators

The malnutrition status of children under the age of 5 years that are at risk remained stable at 9% from 8% of the month of June. This is expected to worsen with the onset of the dry spell.
