Since torrential rains caused flooding in parts of the Sierra Leonean capital, Freetown, on 16 September, there have been no more rains. The situation steadily improves with the response underway.
The rains and flooding led to nine deaths and caused extensive damage to homes and property, with the worst affected areas being Kroo Bay, Moyiba, Aberdeen, Cockerill Bay and Wilkinson road.
As of 18 September, 8,165 people were registered as displaced, out of which 4,665 are temporarily settled at Siaka National Stadium and 3,500 at Atuga Stadium. Humanitarian partners are providing food rations, water and hygiene kits, as well as malnutrition screening for children under the age of five. In Siaka Stadium, three mobile clinics are in place to assist especially pregnant women and children. Some gaps such as latrines and waste collection are still being reported in Atuga Stadium.
The overall coordination of the response is being conducted by the Office of National Security with the assistance of UN agencies, INGOs, civil society and the private sector.
If there is no new deterioration of the situation, this will be the last Flash Update.
