Country: Nigeria

SITUATION OVERVIEW

The analysis in this document is based on the input from humanitarian partners operational in Southern Borno and secondary data consolidated by OCHA.

For the purposes of this Situation Analysis, Southern Borno is defined as the following seven LGAs:

  1. Shani
  2. Bayo
  3. Kwaya Kusar
  4. Hawul
    1. Biu
  5. Askira Uba
  6. Chibok

Severity of crisis

Comparative to Eastern and Northern LGAs of Borno, the humanitarian needs in the Southern axis have been considered less acute. This perception has been influenced by the relative security stability that has allowed previously displaced IDPs to return to their places of origin.
Yet, 13% of the IDPs in Borno are in the Southern axis and 85% of those IDPs are being hosted in LGA HQ towns, further exacerbating the limited capacity of the hosting households and local government adminstrations already under pressure from pre-crisis vulnerabilities.

Humanitarian needs

The affected population is in dire need of food, health, water, sanitation, shelter and livelihoods (MercyCorps, Feb 2016). Needs are expected to increase as new arrivals continue to be registered and existing coping mechanisms are exausted.

A large number of the displaced, particularly in villages, have gone without sustained access to safe water, shelter, health and nutritional support for almost a year. Sexual and gender-based violence and destruction of livelihoods by armed and non-armed groups continue to be reported.

An average of 25-30 cases of severe acute malnutrion are reported in each of the 45 State Primary Healthcare Development Agency health clinics supported UNICEF (UNICEF, May 2016).
